Some creative events are exciting, and then there are nights that feel genuinely unforgettable, and the American Illustration Awards in New York falls firmly into the second category. As a UK-based illustrator who has worked in the industry for years, I knew I had to be there. What I didn’t expect was how energising, inspiring, and fun the evening would be. From the electric glow of the venue to the incredible range of talent in the room, the night reminded me exactly why I love what I do.

The awards party pulls you in the moment you arrive. Standing on a balcony washed in neon purples and seeing the hive of people chatting and having a great time, I instantly felt the rush of excitement that I was here with them and part of it! Everywhere I turned, illustrators, art directors, designers, and publishers were buzzing with conversation. Moments like this make you realise that illustration isn’t just a job, it’s a world full of passionate, imaginative people.
Once the initial excitement settles, you appreciate how much you can learn just by listening. Creative conversations flow easily, and the advice you pick up is invaluable. I always try to be open to everything when it comes to my creative path no matter how daunting it is before hand.

Talking with Emily Harris Art Director at WWD/Footwear News.
Chatting to art directors and fellow artists about their latest projects or their favourite pen nib/brush, was a real highlight and it felt like a place to learn and the interactions felt meaningful and inspiring, especially so for someone who works alone 90% of the time! Stepping into a buzzing New York event like this is wonderfully out of the ordinary for me. My sparkly boots may have left me with sore feet, but it was absolutely worth it! I loved every second.
Lastly, if you’re an illustrator, or dreaming of becoming one, attending events like the American Illustration Awards remind you that you’re part of something bigger. They connect you with people who love the same things you do. And they recharge your creative batteries.

If you ever get the chance to attend, take it. You’ll leave inspired, energised, and with a renewed love for the beautiful, expressive world of illustration.
Thanks for reading my first ever blog post... I know I am so late for this particular "party"! If you’d like to see more posts like this, or get a peek into what I’m working on next, please read more on my blog or drop a comment below.
